Lena Leger overheard that there will be a pictorial while cleaning a magistrate's house. Her twin daughters, Kamber and Celia were dressed as neatly as they could afford. Magda Singer was furious because she thought her daughter did not have this advantage. America however was happy because she believed that she would never be picked due to her plain appearance. The girls who knew about the pictorial were dressed to over the top while the girls who didn't were dressed very plainly. America noted that one girl's lips were so red, they looked like bleeding. Another girl had her hair falling like tendrils all over her face.
